Netizens criticize a man for abusing and maltreating a leatherback turtle captured in Brgy. Sta. Rita, Marabut, Samar.
A man is being criticized online after photos of him riding and stepping on a turtle went viral.
The said photos, showing a form of animal cruelty, was first shared by journalist Even Demata on his Facebook page. The photos also showed the turtle tied in a rope to prevent from escaping.
On social media, Netizens lambasted the man for his wrongdoing saying that he is “heartless” and “ignorant.” The public also urged the man to return the leatherback turtle to the waters.
Other concerned netizens called up the attention of DERN and Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) to investigate the matter.
No concrete details yet about the involve persons but initial report said that the leatherback turtle was captured in Brgy. Sta. Rita, Marabut, Samar. It is not yet known if they return the creature to the sea.
In the Republic Act No. 10631 or The Animal Welfare Act, any person who subjects any animal to cruelty, maltreatment or neglect shall, upon conviction by final judgment, be punished by six months to one and a half years of imprisonment and a fine ranging from 30K to 100K pesos.
