President Rodrigo Duterte declared martial law in Mindanao following clashes between government troops and Maute group in Marawi City on Tuesday, May 23, 2017.
In a press conference on Tuesday, Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella announced the declaration of martial law on behalf of the President.
“The president has called me and asked me to announce that as of 10 p.m., Manila time, he has already declared martial law for the entire island of Mindanao,” Abella said.
“Senior Deputy Executive Secretary Menardo Guevarra has clarified that this was possible on the grounds of existence of rebellion because of what is happening in Mindanao based on Article 7, Section 18 of the Constitution,” he continued.
This is good for 60 days,” Abella added.
Meanwhile, President Duterte was in Russia for a five-day visit to strengthen the geopolitical alliance between the two countries.
It was reported that the trip was cut short due to Marawi incident. President Duterte is expected to return to the Philippines Wednesday afternoon.
